Smart Growth Operational Programme 2014-2020

Painters Sp. z o.o. implemented a project under the Smart Growth Operational Programme 2014-2020, Priority I: Support for R&D activities by enterprises, Action: R&D Projects by Enterprises, Sub-action: Industrial Research and Development Works carried out by enterprises, under project number POIR.01.01.01-00-1138/19, titled "Developing of glaze painting APP/ graphic software with a color palette based on historical pigments."

The subject of the project was an analysis of traditional oil painting and physical, measurable features of each component (paint, brush, canvas, solvent) and the ways they are used in painting. Accordingly, applicant developed a software that accurately reflects oil glaze painting technique in digital form.

Key elements analyzed:

1. Painting materials - oil paints, painting medium (solvent), brushes, canvas. Each pigment has a specific crystal structure, unique physical properties. and optical properties, responsible for the color we see and how this color mixes with other colors. The measurable features of pigments as well as the topography of the canvas and brush paths will be analyzed and described in a way that will allow to create a digital representation of these elements with their actual physical and optical properties.

2. Painting - methods of mixing, applying and diluting paints. One of the key challenges will be to learn about the physics of optical color mixing and then reflect this process in digital form. Optical mixing involves applying transparent layers of paint on top of each other. They are not physically mixed, each subsequent layer can be applied if the previous one dries, but because of the transparency, the light falling on the image mixes the paints with each other.

The developed software consist of digital canvas, palettes and paints. The application was designed in a mobile (tablets) and desktop versions and integrated with existing hardware solutions (electronic brushes, stylus). The application is intended mainly for children and adolescents up to 15 years old and art school students.
